California-based multi-instrumentalist Arieh Berl recently made the move from playing punk and indie anthems in Bay Area bands to developing a new, genre-defying sound through his solo project, Pink Skies. Today, he has released his debut single, “Start.End,” a spacey dream-pop track with major psychedelic influences. “Start.End” begins with a fuzzy synth rhythm warbling in the distance. Arieh’s breathy vocals float in singing “I can’t tell if this is ending / Or just beginning to start,” the first of many introspective lyrics offered up in the song. After Arieh’s vocal introduction, a slick funk beat pulses with slaps of percussion and R&B-tinged tones. Throughout the track, hazy and hypnotic vocals swirl up from the fog of 80s prog-rock rhythms that reverberate with an intriguing vibrancy. Pink Skies’ production work is impressive, each element of the song bringing solo talent but combining for a full, rich sound. “Start.End” is an otherworldly existential anthem with entrancing instrumentation and smooth, sleek vocal work.
